A Tale of Two Nellies from Saanich/Victoria,British Columbia



 






Nellie Furtado

In February 2002 the very talented Nelly Furtado, who grew up in Saanich (a
city next door to another city, Victoria), received her first Grammy Award in
Los Angeles for best pop vocalist performing the song she wrote, "I'm Like A
Bird." Less than a year earlier she received 4 Canadian Junos: Best Single, Best
New Solo Artist, Best Songwriter and Best Producer. Nelly, who began performing
as a toddler, is immensely proud of her Portugese heritage.Still in her early
20's, Nelly's career is soaring--just like a bird.




Nellie McClung

When this Nellie arrived in Saanich she was already famous: best-selling author/ performer, former member of the Alberta legislature and star of the western women's suffrage movement. Her colourful oratory and ready quips won the vote for Manitoba women. Other provinces followed. Her moto: Get the job done and let 'em howl. In Saanich her house "Lantern Lane" sat in a cherry orchard. From here she wrote a newspaper column "Leaves from Lantern Lane" . As one of the "Famous Five" she has been immortalized in statues in Calgary & Ottawa. A library in Saanich is named after her.
