The City of Colwood is largely a residential, suburban
community located 12 km west of Victoria City. One of the
Western Communities, it is bounded by Langford, View Royal
and Metchosin. The economic base is service to the residents of the
surrounding area. Employment opportunities consist of retailing,
personal and professional services. The two gravel and sand
processing operations cover a significant area but provide limited
local employment. Major retail centers are at Colwood Corners, with
anchors of a new London Drugs and a Fairway Food Store. Nearby
CANWEST Mall is in neighbouring Langford. Down the popular "Colwood
Strip" are several car dealerships and the CRD's Juan de Fuca
Recreation Center. Features of the Rec Center are the two large ice
surfaces for skating and curling, an indoor pool, as well as the Golf
course, our new Commonwealth Cycling Velodrome and Lawn Bowls.
Access to Colwood by car, by driving south on the Island Highway,
turn right at the light at Millstream Ave., then left at the light at
Goldstream. Goldstream Ave takes you to Colwood Corners. Coming out
from town you have the choice of taking the island highway north to
the new interchange at the Hwy #1/ 1A and taking the 1A offramp west
passed the 6mile pub up the 'strip' to Colwood Corners. Or you can
come out Hwy 1A from Esquimalt or Saanich, through View Royal to the
same 6 Mile pub. Coming from Sooke, you keep on Sooke Rd (Hwy 14)
past the Royal Roads University on to Colwood Corners. The daily E&N
dayliner (north & south bound) goes through Langford. BC Transit has
a major Bus Exchange at the Juan de Fuca Rec. Center, and another in
Langford at the CANWEST Mall.
