*** Who started it? ***

Baron Georges Cuvier was the first to study "extinct" animals,
particularily mammals. In his studies he found that certain animals that
had existed at some point were no longer with us. And so the theory of
Extinction had come to be. This gave Charles Darwin the chance to bring
forth his theory.

Charles Darwin became famous for what we now call "Darwin's
Theory of Evolution". His theory was that not all species died out, but
evolved and changed to suit their current environment. Those too weak or
two slow to adapt would die out, where as those who could adapt with the
environment didn't.

These two theories combined with the discovery of fossilized
animal remains, gave us what we now know as "paleontology".
