Godin isn't taking it seriously: that much is plain. An early comment on this book was that the major sales would come from people buying it to find out if they were in it. Of the slightly-less-than-a-thousand entries, about half are people. (Many of the rest are Usenet newsgroups.) I'm not there. Oh, well. Of those who are, I am acquainted with five. No one from the virus research community is there. No one from the data security community is there. One person listed as a data security specialist in the book isn't. She wasn't told that her email address was listed in the book, and was less than thrilled at receiving demanding and even abusive email from people who got her address from the book. Of the non-people listings, a significant number are out of date. *Way* out of date. No, I have to take it back. There are virus and data security experts. You won't be able to find them, though, because of the structure of the book. If you want to find sf authors and magazine columnists, this may help. Otherwise, use the Usenet addresses mail server. Basically, this falls under the heading of computer gag gifts, and any pretense of another purpose can only annoy people. Of course, who really cares about data security mavens? Almost by definition, none of them are either rich *or* famous. Still, I have to say that, of those listed in the "Celebrities" section, half of the names I don't even recognize. copyright Robert M.
