For those with a technical background but no particular telecom training, this makes a handy reference to get you instant expertise in the requisite topics--at least enough to get started, anyway. The various chapters differ in quality and level; most go, at least nominally, to the frame level. It is a bit difficult to understand the divisions in the first three parts of the book. All of the chapters discuss topics related to large networks or backbone transmission nets covering OSI, DEC's various protocols, TCP/IP in SNA, ISDN, SONET, X.25, MAN, SMDS and ATM. Part four discusses local area networks, but moves out of protocols and into cabling, disaster recovery and tape backup. The last part has two chapters on email and groupware. The individual chapters do provide a decent background for each topic covered. After a quick read, the technically inclined should have a reasonable grasp of base concepts, as well as the major terminology and acronyms. A handy reference for those needing a quick course in any of these areas. copyright Robert M.
