Therefore, it is nice to find a book which is easily readable (I'm sure the businesspeople will appreciate that) and which also has an accurate and realistic "feel" for the net. A manager with no technical background will find that this book provides a fairly painless way to get a good idea of what can be done with the net, and what needs to be set up before it can be done. Intriguingly, I am at a loss to explain why this should be so. Emery complains that prior Internet business books were done by techies, which I know is not the problem. (I'll agree with him about the lawyers and academics.) Emery's own technical background is lacking, which becomes obvious in sections dealing with topics such as encryption. The bibliography, as one might expect, is extensive, but the recommendations are suspect. (On the other hand, Emery does provide some annotation, which is much better than the "look how many books I've read" lists in many Internet guides.) Yet, in spite of all of the flaws, Emery's view of the net is bang on. Companies approaching the Internet for the first time will need technical help that they won't get from this book. What they will get from the book is far more important. (And the book will help you to judge the competency of the technical help you need.) (There are, already, two "versions" of the first edition, with a second edition due out later this year. The later of the two current versions has an additional two chapters, one covering World Wide Web establishment and presence, and the other providing the first discussion I've seen on the "voice over net" Internet "phone" systems.) copyright Robert M.
