A knowledge of programming itself probably is. The text is readable and clear. Marketos explanation of object-orientation is brief, but clear and very realistic. The tone is quite breezy, but while it would be hard to say that the jokes help with comprehension of the Java language, at least they don't hinder it. Details of the language proceed at a fast pace, with many reference tables but comparatively few examples. For the experience programmer wanting a start on the new language, this is a reasonably good choice. copyright Robert M.
