It assumes a background in C or C++, as well as familiarity and experience with object-oriented programming. Given any of that background and some determination, however, Flanagan's work serves quite well as a presentation of the Java language. There is a quick history and background (which, for once, doesn't oversell the security aspects of Java), a chapter on how Java differs from C (and C++), and a brief but excellent introduction to objects in Java. There is, of course, the usual coverage of the Java API, a Java language reference, a quick reference and cross reference. Of particular interest are the chapters on Java security (the Java Virtual Machine implements, among other things, a non-von Neumann architecture) and Unicode. copyright Robert M.
