The explanations are usually clear, and better than many of the Java offerings out in the market. Chapter one is particularly good in getting readers familiar with the operation of the JDK (Java Development Kit). The coverage of the book is broader than most. Ranking with the best of the books on Java, this work is still not outstanding. The explanation of object-orientation is weak. While the content does not require a knowledge of C, such a background would help in many areas where examples from C are used as the primary explanations. The determined newcomer can certainly learn Java from this book, but it still isn't going to be easy. copyright Robert M.
