It starts with the basics, and progresses to areas where DOS has no related functions. The material can be terse at times, and ground is covered quite quickly, but the persistent user should have no trouble. For those who know MS-DOS at a cursory level, the beginning chapters provide the equivalent UNIX commands for those that you do know in MS-DOS. Novice users could proceed until they feel uncomfortable, and save the remaining material for further exploration at a later time. For those familiar with computers, but not with MS-DOS, the DOS content is neither necessary nor intrusive. It serves primarily as an introduction and example, or counter-example, of the UNIX command. However, because the book assumes a knowledge of MS-DOS, most functions receive only minimal explanation. For those migrating from DOS to UNIX, or for DOS users needing some introduction to the UNIX-laden Internet, a good choice. copyright Robert M.
