This material is taken from System V, revisions 2 and 3, but it could be quite useful to reasonably comperate users of almost any UNIX variant. The bulk of the book is simply an alphabetical listing of the commands. The descriptions are not voluble, but should be plain to any intermediate user familiar with command line documentation. Any intelligent novice should also be able to use this manual to try out the various functions of the operating system shell and utilities. The writing is not only clear but also readable, and the presentation and layout adds to the value of the text. Given the scope of UNIX, users more familiar with smaller scale operating systems may be surprised that a single book should be devoted solely to the command reference. These readers should note that there are a number of very significant utility programs herein: awk gets eighteen pages and vi takes up another twenty-three. This could not be recommended as a tutorial for complete novices. However, as a number of hobbyist users move into the UNIX arena, and as UNIX becomes a major platform for Internet access providers, there should be a considerable market for this level of book. copyright Robert M.
