The aim is to promote development and standards research in order to facilitate the realization of the full potential of the Web. In partnership with O'Reilly and Associates, the Consortium is producing the World Wide Web Journal on a quarterly basis. The inaugural issue contains the conference proceedings of the Fourth International World Wide Web Conference, held in Boston during December of 1995. The papers cover the full range of the Web: a user survey, collaborative systems, new technologies, tools, design, applications, security, and commerce. As is usual with presentations at a general conference, specialists may want more technical detail than is supplied within their own field, but generalists will find a wealth of information on the emerging horizons. I was very impressed with the overall quality of the papers, and the energy of the work going on in the field. (For the inaugural issue of a periodical, there is surprisingly little indexing information supplied. The issue number is hard to find and there isn't even an editor of record. I have cited Berners-Lee in his position as program chair for the conference.) copyright Robert M.
