There are the "undocumented" books which give you the inside scoop and helpful tips--but only if you have a technical background and specialized needs. Then, there are the "lamebrain" guides, which prey on the weak-willed by adopting a cute tone for the opening chapter, telling you what a wonderful program you've bought--and thereafter reproduce the original documentation. This book is neither: it is a thorough and well-organized introduction to Microsoft Word on the Macintosh. Recognizing that the first application most users get is the wordprocessor, the book opens with three chapters on the Mac, fonts and printing. Part two covers installation (including upgrading), basics, and general preference settings. Part three is a series of examples of documents, with references forward into the advanced chapters of the book. This means that, once the basics are covered, a user can look for specific document types and go directly to the material relating to the needed commands and functions. The remainder of the book covers the advanced techniques under appearances (text elements, characters and formatting styles), document elements (footers, heading, boxes, notes, and so forth) and special functions. For those needing help with Word 5 on the Mac, a very practical choice. copyright Robert M.
