PCINOCLN.RVW 931111 Comparison Review Company and product: Cheyenne Software 55 Bryant Avenue Roslyn, NY 11576 USA 800-243-9462 516-484-5110 fax: 516-484-3493 InocuLAN Summary: menu front end and LAN additions for IRIS AntiVirus Cost Rating (1-4, 1 = poor, 4 = very good) "Friendliness" Installation Ease of use Help systems Compatibility Company Stability Support Documentation Hardware required Performance Availability Local Support General Description: A repackaging of IRIS AntiVirus (cf PCANTIVP.RVW and PCANTIVR.RVW) with a menu interface and NetWare messaging, logging and NLM features. Comparison of features and specifications User Friendliness Installation The package is shipped on two unprotected 1.44M or 1.2M floppies. Installation as an NLM is available only in automated form; installation on a workstation or server is available either automated, or manual. Automated installation will create entries in the AUTOEXEC.BAT for PREVENT, IMMUNE and EXAMINE. Optionally, a recovery disk may be created which backs up system areas and files from the hard disk. Ease of use Operation of the IRIS files is automated through the InocuLAN menu. There are few options in any case, so use should not be difficult regardless of circumstances. Help systems On-screen help is available. Compatibility The LAN features are for NetWare only. In testing, PREVENT has been fairly intrusive in regard to fairly normal applications use. Company Stability Cheyenne has recently been showing a much stronger presence in the market. Company Support The usual. Documentation A "Supervisor Guide and Reference," several copies of a "User Guide" and several copies of a "Quick Reference Card" are included in the package. The "Supervisor Guide" is the master reference, with the others being subsets of it. The text is quite simple, with several sections being essentially repeated up to three times with very minor differences. There is little in the package that should present any difficulties, but there is little in the manual to help if they arise. A section on general virus information starts with a clear statement of what a virus is, and how it infects ... and ends in less than a page. System Requirements NetWare 2.x or 3.x. Performance InocuLAN is basically a LAN version, and menu front end, for the IRIS AntiVirus product (cf. PCANTIVR.RVW and PCANTIVP.RVW). Besides the LAN features and menu, additional items are the ability to scan Macintosh files on the server and the preparation of a recovery disk, with hard disk and system information. (Note that the manual initially suggested saving system info to the hard disk itself: this is of limited use in recovering a deleted hard disk.) Local Support None provided. Support Requirements The package has limited options so support requirements should not be high. copyright Robert M.
