The fictional authors of the biography of one of the most cantankerous Senior Members of the Howard Families, Lazarus Long, are Chief Archivists of the Howard Foundation. Julian Foote the 45th introduces the story and his successor, Carolyn Briggs, produced an "abridge popular edition." Foote also appears as a character throughout the novel as the Howard Foundation grapples with the the highly unconventional Long.
