Original Novel Title: On This Rockne: A Notre Dame Mystery

Author: Ralph M. McInerny

Publisher: New York, NY: St. Martins Press, October 1997 (hardcover)

Mary M. Flekke wrote this review of On This Rockne:

Ralph McInerny, best known for his Father Dowling mystery series, has developed a new set of characters. Roger and Phil Knight, brothers and partners in crime solving, have recently moved to the [University of] Notre Dame campus where Roger has been invited to teach Catholic Literature and be the first recipient of the newly developed Huneker Chair. Phil is a private detective who relocates at Roger's whim, Roger being an "Ironside" style of character (extraordinarily large man who prefers a motorized cart as transportation).

Notre Dame is about to be gifted with a generous gift to memorialize its famous football coach, Knute Rockne. Strings attached to this gift make it a bone of contention among the campus community, and especially the trustees who have to determine whether or not the "strings" make it worth accepting such a generous gift. As the donor and donees attempt to work out a satisfactory compromise, one of the leading trustees is found murdered. The prime suspect - the ex-husband - also soon becomes a victim. Phil and Roger combine their considerable powers of deduction with the assistance of the campus Archivist to assist the local police in determining the identity of the real murder and to work out the ultimate memorial to the famous Knute Rockne.
