Dear all,

As some of you know, the 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council's
Universal Periodic Review starts next week, April 22nd, and runs until May
3rd.

As brief background, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a new mechanism
of the United Nations which started in April 2008 and consists of the review
of the human rights practices of all States in the world, once every four
and a half years.

On April 26th, from 9-12:30 UTC+1, Canada's human rights practices will be
reviewed, and other States will make recommendations on a variety of issues,
based on their own priorities, the Canadian National report, and written
recommendations made by NGOs, submitted last October. Our coalitions made
recommendations on a number of issues relating to access to information,
freedom of expression, freedom of association, privacy and the internet.

If these recommendations are picked up at the review of Canada, and
accepted, they provide an excellent opportunity to work with the Canadian
government in implementation.

It is possible to watch this process online, at
https://www.un.org/webcast/unhrc/

You can find more detailed information on the UPR process here:
http://www.upr-info.org/-UPR-Process-.html

and more information on the review of Canada here:

Please share this information with your networks, where there may be
interest, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Shawna
