[Advisors] CIRA elections -- not this time

A respectable showing, and I notice that Bill St. Arnaud also didn't make it
which to my mind is even more surprising given his overall role and
reputation in the larger tech community (or didn't folks like/know
CANARIE...

One question... On a very quick review I couldn't turn up a single name on
the CIRA Board who would be clearly identifying with/representing the
"public interest"... tech interests, corporate interests, professional
interests but no one who would clearly be identifiable (as you are) with
"civil society" and the "public interest" understood broadly. (And I know
that the CIRA folks and the Board members will all reply to this that they
are all "representing the public interest" but that isn't evident from the
resumes.)

Am I wrong? If not that of course, is simply a mirror of the situation with
respect to ICANN and other of the mechanisms of Internet Governance.

I'm sorry not to be in the country for the Internet Governance meeting as
this is an issue I would have brought up... (BTW, since you are attending
perhaps you could raise the issue of remote participation. I asked about
this in a note replying to my invitation but haven't heard anything back
from them.

Thanks to everyone who supported me for the CIRA board -- but I didn't make
it, as some of you will have seen. There were a couple of people who
finished ahead who are already on the board and running for another term --
and just like all elections, that gives them the edge. So I finished 3rd,
which I thought was pretty respectable, given the circumstances.

All this does give me enough profile with CIRA to be invited to the Canadian
Internet Forum (Oct. 9) and to be part of the Community Investment Program
evaluation term -- so, as far as I am concerned, it is all worthwhile. I
will represent the interests of community based networks in both these fora
as best I can.

Marita
