Dear all,

I would like to draw your attention to a special category of community wireless networks, those that focus on local interactions and operate mainly outside the public Internet. Such networks become easier and easier to install, especially at a "hyperlocal" level, raising many interesting questions, related to social, political, technical, economic, and other challenges to be addressed.

There is now a growing community of researchers from different fields, practitioners, activists and artists that are interested in this type of "offline networks". See for example:
- http://librelist.com/browser/off.networks/
and more at http://nethood.org/links.php

Our recent paper at the journal of community informatics on the "right to the hybrid city"
and the sidewalk metaphor, I think provides a good introduction on this topic and some answers to the key question: "Why?":

If you find all this of any interest, you are very welcome to participate at a new series of interdisciplinary workshops on DIY networking, starting at a well-known engineering conference, Mobisys 2015, in Florence from May 18-22nd. Submission
deadline: February 28th!
