First Mile Connectivity Consortium at Basic Service Objective Hearings
July 14 was the deadline for the first round of input into the CRTC's hearings on the Basic Service Objectives for telecommunication services across Canada. Among other issues, the hearings are examining whether broadband should be considered a 'basic service', and how broadband infrastructure and services might be delivered in remote and northern regions of the country.
The First Mile Connectivity Consortium was one of over 300 organizations and individuals that are participating in the hearings.
The public hearing, <http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2015/2015-134.htm> CRTC 2015-134: Review of basic telecommunications services, will take place over the next year. It will have a significant impact on high-speed Internet affordability, access, and quality for all Canadians.

The FMCC is arguing that broadband should be considered a basic service in Canada. We are also arguing that service providers with strong ties to northern and remote communities that are already providing such services should gain access to subsidies associated with that work. To this end we are proposing a new Northern Infrastructure and Services Fund.
