Hi everyone,


I’m sure you’ve all been anxiously waiting for the broadband 
announcement by Rural Economic Development Minister Maryam Monsef. Trust 
me: us too.


This week marked a monthsince Monsef claimed applications for the 
Universal Broadband Fund would be opening “in the coming days”. But so 
far, there’s been nothing.


When the pandemic was first declared, the government said they 
understood that bridging the Digital Divide was an emergency—especially 
for our kids.


Without proper home Internet, rural and low-income students have been 
suffering through makeshift remote education: exclusion from virtual 
class activities, homework done from parking lots to access school WiFi, 
paper worksheets being picked up and dropped off, etc. And with the 
pandemic still going on, we’ll be sending them back to the same 
situation this September.


We think that Minister Monsef needs a reminder of what an emergency 
means. And we need your help!To ramp up the pressure, OpenMedia is 
thinking of penning an op-ed—we want all eyes on Monsef and her 
inaction. We also want to know: would you be interested in putting out a 
joint statement from the GCC calling on Monsef to act immediately?

What do you think about these ideas? Do you have anything in the works 
already that you’d like to share?
