Hi everyone,As you’ve most likely heard, this morning the government
finally announced the opening of the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF) for
applications. You can read our first impressions here
<https://openmedia.org/press/item/governments-universal-broadband-fund-finally-announced>,
and we’re highly interested in hearing yours as well. TL:DR, it is a
positive first step that goes beyond past government promises, but we’re
fairly concerned that incumbent telecoms will take the lion’s share of
the support, perpetuating our decades-long telecommunications market
dysfunction. The availability of $150 million in rapid buildout funds
for 2021, as well as the launch of the Pathfinder application support
program, are things we want to share far and wide. To maximize the
chance of sustainable and permanent community benefits, we need to do
everything we can to help local communities and Indigenous groups become
aware of + participate in the current rapid application round (deadline
Jan 15), and access later funds. Can you help us by sharing the
application portal
<https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/139.nsf/eng/h_00006.html>and information
about Pathfinder
<https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/139.nsf/eng/00016.html>with your
networks? As well, we want to help facilitate the collection of
community/local feedback about Pathfinder and the application process in
general, so that we can assist in advocating for any necessary changes
by the government. Do you have ideas to share about ways to approach
this?Cheers,Erin Knight
