Subject: [BCLA-List] sad news
With great sadness, I must share the news that Brian Campbell died on
December 27, 2016.
Brian was a library leader, activist and mentor. A strong champion of the
Intellectual Freedom Committee from the beginning of his career as a
librarian, he later founded and led the BCLA's Information Policy Committee
and the BC Community Network (originally the Vancouver FreeNet). He was also
active nationally and internationally in the library world.
After Brian retired from Vancouver Public Library as its Director of Systems
and Planning in 2006, he turned his activist attention to other global
causes. And yet, he never lost his passion for the important democratic role
that libraries can play in shaping communities and protecting the public
interest. Certainly, the library world is richer for his significant
contributions. He helped shape my career, just as he has helped hundreds of
others, directly or indirectly.
This barely begins to capture the impact Brian has had in this world. More
will be said, but for now, please think of the impact that Brian had on your
lives, and think of what his family is going through in what should be the
most festive season. I know our hearts are with Gillian and the rest of his
family.
As information on a memorial becomes available, I will share it with
everyone.?
