Hi folks. As part of an attempt to map the kinds of expertise
available in member groups, the North American At-large
Organization (part of the ICANN has sent out a list of topics we
might put our names to -- as potential contributors to policy
discussions. I can see a few that are not too onerous for this
community -- community networks, public interest, internet
governance, education, net neutrality, etc. I will put my own name
down under a few of these, but I am hoping that others might also
step forward. It would be nice to show some strength -- even if
nothing comes of it -- don't expect your phone to start ringing.
There is an e-mail at the end with more explanation. Let me know
if you can help out. I will be happy to be the intermediary.

Dear Marita

We are writing to you, first of all, to thank your
Telecommunities Canada, a valued member of NARALO, the regional
the At-Large organization of the global end-users participating
in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN), in furthering the interests of Internet end-users, and
also to explore new ways of strengthening our two-way
cooperation.

1) Since 2003, the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) has
issued over 300 pieces of advice on ICANN policies and issues
that impact on Internet users. As one of the five regional
At-Large organizations, NARALO has done its fair share, but our
group actively engaged in the policy work is is rather small. We
need more hands holding the pen.

In fact, as you might recall, the Second At Large Summit
(London, June 2014) took note of the problem and suggested a
solution, ie. to map the current expertise and interests in the
ALS’s to identify Subject Matter Experts. As the first step,
some statistics were gathered, but they are not enough when
concrete help is needed.

This is why I’m now asking you to identify a few subject matter
experts in your Telecommunities Canada willing to participate in
the drafting of NARALO input to the ALAC advice. For the most
relevant subject matter areas, please take a look at the pie
chart diagram on the ALAC website https://atlarge.icann.org/

2) There is a tendency of growing Internet-related
multistakeholder dialogue and cooperation on national/regional
level North America. At NARALO, we would like to know, whether
and how Telecommunities Canada is engaged in this kind of
activities. We would like to be of help, if needed, by
facilitating exchange of information and best practices, and
well as contacts among ICANN-related stakeholders. I would
welcome your feedback and suggestions.

We are 29 ALSes in NARALO , all with their specific features.
Some cover a broad spectrum of Internet and information society
issues. Some are interested in a narrower segment among them.
Thus, one size does not fit all. If you would be interested in
developing ways of cooperation with NARALO tailored to the needs
of Telecommunities Canada, the At-Large staff could set up a
teleconference between us at a mutually convenient time.

I’m very much looking forward to your reply, with your
suggestions for your local ALS experts who could help NARALO and
ALAC to be even more effective in their work for the benefit of
the end-users of the Internet! Alternatively you can go to the
spreadsheet directly and enter the information as some others
have done. Here is the link to the google doc <a
