Freenet Operations Review
Recently a new-venture team was given permission to construct a =
statement of financial position, revenue and expenses in order to =
qualify for an application process towards funding project development. =
A strong team effort emerged from the financial review to outline =
current issues and requirements that follow, including a timeline and =
strategy to help Freenet move forward.
mission
The team is in the process of reviewing Freenet's current system of =
operations, strengths and weaknesses:
=B7 to help generate financial statements for future grant funding =
requirements, required immediately in order to build new online =
infrastructure for a new venture
=B7 to help outline a plan of where we want to be and how we want =
to operate
=B7 to help the board and interested parties generate a new =
mission, vision and strategic plan
goals
To present Freenet as financially accountable, we need to know where it =
stands:
1) requires a committed board that meets on a regular basis =
(monthly/6 months/annually)
a) they outline and pass a budget each year which must include =
ongoing development
b) they receive a statements of financial position and revenue and =
expenses (ask board; monthly/annually)
c) they develop a mission statement, vision statement and strategic =
plan
d) they envision areas of new/future development:
i) to drive project fundraising/grant writing efforts
ii) to recruit new board members who have the qualifications needed =
to achieve future goals
2) requires a professional bookkeeper with eCommerce experience (paid =
part-time, short-term):
a) to set up an accounting system that is digital; a virtual or =
online system
b) to develop and oversee process and reporting functions
c) to oversee development of an annual budget
d) to find out what we have to charge/remit taxes on (pst, gst)
e) to find out how/if we can apply for gst and tax rebates, etc.
f) to prepare annual tax filing
3) requires a professional accounts manager (paid part-time, =
long-term):
a) to collect mail and online service requests
b) to write cheques on receipt of invoices and balance the cheque =
book
c) to make deposits
d) to keep and file appropriate paper records (or digitally scan =
them), and file for tax rebates
e) to enter paid invoices and deposits into the accounting system
f) to prepare regular monthly and year-to-date reports for the board =
to review
g) to meet payroll obligations and keep payroll records
h) to prepare annual tax filing
4) requires a culture of appreciation and respect for funders and =
customers:
a) that is transparent; we spend their money as we say we will spend =
it
b) that creates outstanding reports in a timely manner, per project =
end-date, monthly, annually
c) that provides knowledgeable and consistent client tech-support =
and customer satisfaction
Project Development
It is critical to lower overhead costs, develop new pricing strategies =
while protecting low income clients, and start thinking outside the box. =
A new venture is developing infrastructure to increase online community =
capacity. Top projects & ideas from 8 years of working with non-profit =
requirements, will be refined & packaged, and made available as =
affordable solutions to agencies. Development began in December 2012, =
and currently funds are being sought on a per project basis.

artists, marketplace vendors, boutiques; train merchants, provide =

Affiliate; potential to build community-tools and partnerships on top of =
the database system; potential to design print-directories for agency =
sponsors, groups, etc.
4) Data System: Build outcome database; templates customized per =
agency; gross $4,000/yr.
helpdesk
Advance member helpdesk and support services, including customer =
satisfaction services:
1) Mobile Unit: drive to home or office for 1-1 support (car =
insurance; tax advantage to adv. on car)
a) Computer or online tech-support; 1st hour free; $25/hr.
b) Window Display: take photos, upload store, setup merchant, =
orientation; setup free; $25/hr.
c) Personal Shopper: local store deliveries and returns $15/hr.
d) Delivery: $5/trip
e) Moodle Support: training & onsite support, 8 hr. free; $25/hour; =
content development $50/hr.
2) Online Helpdesk; web conference window; options for text, chat, =
phone (VOIP), email; setup
3) Video Library: Develop =93how to=94 videos to help members online, =
i.e. setup own store, upload images, participate in a forum, update =
profile/portfolio, purchase or renew services online, etc.
4) Survey Corner: produce easy yes/no questions to shape services and =
customer satisfaction.
media and communications
Within the moodle and wordpress global community, there is a need for =
simple and affordable online media and communication features that can =
be embedded in a classroom course to support students, and in the office =
to support professionals. Membership packages would include these =
features.
a) Develop a Web Conferencing system.
b) Develop a Webinar platform.
a) Develop audio/video streaming capabilities; offer private media =
accounts for online developers.
b) Enhance online content and participation by adding flash content =
and interactivity.
c) Production Services: offer design, moodle development, =
programming and media production to enhance online content; acquire =
hardware and software to produce web videos.
moodle packages
The moodle training & learning centre will host online content, support =
unique moodle development, and provide community with remote access to =
courses and media resources offered by community partners; respected =
agencies, literacy networks, research groups and creative educators.
This may involve importing, rebuilding and storing moodle 2.4 courses; =
offering virtual office space as an exclusive online environment; and =
supporting developers and group training initiatives to get off the =
ground. Packages are negotiable.
One goal is to be a resource for free unique public education supporting =
community!
marketing and sales
Freenet currently spends $25/month on CanPages; yellow page ads. Goals =
are to build a marketing and sales team, and then plan and implement a =
new marketing strategy.
