Internet Resource Directory, Part 1:

LISTSERV Discussion Groups of Interest to Educators

version 2: August 5, 1993

The information in this file is the result of Internet "prospecting" and
teamwork by 24 eastern Nebraska teachers and 22 teachers and trainers
from Texas who were enrolled in graduate Internet-based telecomputing
courses during the Spring 1992 & 1993 semesters at the University of
Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Texas at Austin. Much of their
work for the course entailed exploring different Internet resource sites,
then writing, fieldtesting, and revising friendly documentation describing
online resources that they felt to be of value to teachers, trainers, and their
students.

Below please find information on many LISTSERVs (electronic mail-based
discussion groups). Please forgive any grammatical errors that you find,
understanding that some of the authors who contributed entries to this
document are not native English speakers. Also, please remember that
Internet sites can change daily, so although the entries that you see below
were correct and up-to-date when they were created and tested, they may
not be so when you read them.

**This is NOT meant to be an exhaustive list of all of the groups of use to
educators**. Rather, it is a beginning of what we hope will be an ongoing
collaborative effort among telecomputing educators on a larger scale. We
invite you to use this, share it with other teachers, amend it, append to it,
and update it. We hope that the information that it contains will be useful
to you.

Unfortunately I received very little mail from the group
ABILITY. I did notice that another group called ABLE-L has the same
address and list coordinator. It seems to be associated with the ABILITY
group but is perhaps the group to register for if your interested in
discussion. ABILITY is written up as a Journal for the study and
advancement of the academically, artistically and athletically able
whereas ABLE-L is listed as discussion and submission. I did subscribe
to ABLE-L several days ago but have received no mail.

LIST NAME: ALCOHOL Alcohol & Drug Studies
An open list to voice opinions about abuse of alcohol, illegal and other
commonly used drugs.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS: LISTSERV@LMUACAD

PARTICIPATION ADDRESS: ALCOHOL@LMUACAD.

LIST COORDINATOR'S ADDRESS:
	Phillip Charles OliffFXX1@LMUACAD

REACTIONS:
ALCOHOL had several topics discussed: the designated driver program
and what restaurants and bars are doing to encouraged the designated
driver, employee assistance programs, treatment statistics, what actually
happens to the brain when a person becomes intoxiated and the
responsibility of the college campus in the amount of beer that is
consumed there. The treatment statistics brought on a heated debate on
AA, its twelve step program, accuracy of its success, and its quick growth.
The debate is still going on . There is a touch of FLAMING in the debate
as emotions rise.

LIST NAME: ALTLEARN
Altlearn is a LISTSERV discussion group for the sharing of
alternative learning strategies especially for the physically handicapped.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS: LISTSERV@SJUVM.BITNET
PARTICIPATION ADDRESS: ALTLEARN@SJUVM.BITNET LIST
COORDINATORS ADDRESS: NONE

REACTIONS:
The Altlearn discussion group is frequented by educators with a variety of
backgrounds. While the discussions are not all useful to the traditional
classroom teacher, I find this listserv to be both interesting and valuable.
The articles of less use to a traditional classroom teacher concern such
issues as technologies for the hearing and visually impaired. The more
useful articles deal with a variety of educational issues such as
cooperative education, group discussion, and grading. The candor of the
articles is helpful and supportive.

	2. Send an email message.
	3. Send message to listserv@sjuvm.

people would give opinions, I found it hard to understand at times as did
the other people in the group.

This listserv group discusses world-wide environmental and
ecological issues. The current "Hot Topic" is the mass destruction of the
rainforests in Malaysia. The natives of the area, the Penans, have gone
as far as to build human barricades, but the logging has not stopped.
Also discussed in the group are books and book reviews on
politically and economically pertinent information, as well as a how-to,
and does anyone know about...?
Basically anything that exerts an influence of some kind or another
on the biosphere is fair game for discussion here.

LIST NAME: BLIND-L
This list is intended to provide a forum for discussion of computer use by
the blind and visually impaired.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS: LISTSERV@UAFSYSB
PARTICIPATION ADDRESS: BLIND-L@UAFSYSB
LIST COORDINATOR'S ADDRESS: None listed.

REACTIONS:
There is not much activity in this forum. As time passes and the
expense of the hardware comes down I would imagine that this group
could become very active. Most of the discussions that were sent came
from educators asking questions about what type or braille printers and
other technical equipment worked best with the blind or visually
handicapped student. It would be nice to actually see the students
themselves become active on the computer telecommunicating.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO THIS DISCUSSION GROUP:
	1. Send an E-mail message to: LISTSERV@UAFSYSB
	2. Leave the subject line blank
	3. Type this message: subscribe BLIND-L Jane Doe (Instead of
Jane Doe you would actually type in your name.)
	4. Send message

Confirmation of Subscription:
	1. Once you have sent your message you will see a series of
messages on your screen that this file is being sent from one computer to
another until it gets to its final destination.
	2. Within a couple of days you should receive an E-mail message
that states that your subscription has been accepted.
	3. Then the mail starts coming. During the Spring '92 this group
was pretty inactive. You may only get 2 or 3 messages in a 4 week
period. This is pretty slow.

How to send your own article to this group - -
	1. You send messages through the E-mail to a different address
than the one given above. The above address is like a utilities address.
The discussion address is: BLIND-L@UAFSYSB
	2. If you decide to send articles to this group you will need to send
a command to:
		LISTSERV@UAFSYSB indicating what kind of
acknowledgment you wish to receive about your messages.
Your options are:
SET BLIND-L ACK -all mail is acknowledged
SET BLIND-L MSGACK -interactive messages only
SET BLIND-L NOACK -none are acknowledged

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS DISCUSSION GROUP:
	1. Send an E-mail message to: LISTSERV@UAFSYSB
	2. Leave subject line blank
	3. Type this message: SIGNOFF BLIND-L (Note that your name is
not necessary this time.)
	4. Send message

OTHER FEATURES:
	1. A list of available archive files can be obtained by sending an
INDEX BLIND-L command.
	2. These files can be retrieved by means of a GET BLIND-L
filetype command or by using the database search facilities of
LISTSERV. Send an INFO DATABASE command for more information
on this.
	3. Anyone can determine who is signed up for this list by using the
REVIEW command. If you do not wish your name to be available to
others in this fashion then you must issue a SET BLIND-L CONCEAL
command.

activities. Some students also use the list to find roommates or

Chinese students and scholars in the University at Buffalo.

Jan computer literacy survey and 3 other administrative messages.
The log listed eight messages of which one was survey request and
another announcing a conference. Reading these message gave no
real sense what the list content is. During April the activity

LIST NAME: CW-L	Computers and Writing
This LISTSERV discusses issues involved in using word processors and
telecommunications to teach writing skills.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS:	LISTSERV@TTUVM1
PARTICIPATION ADDRESS: CW-L@TTUVM1
LIST COORDINATOR'S ADDRESS: YJFOK@TTACS Fred Kemp

REACTIONS:
The discussion of this group centers on the use of computers for college
writing courses. There is a debate about the use of wrod processors to
aid the students in learning the writing process. It is generally agreed
that word processors do help with the revision process making it a less
laborious task. The main question is that of quantity vs. quality. Some
participants feel that word processors enable students to write longer
passages, but do not necessarily contribute to a quality product. Their
point is that quantity does not necessarily mean quality. The other side
proposes that the more a student writes the better he/she becomes. In
other words "practice makes perfect."
Another topic seems to be the knowledge or rather the lack of knowledge
about telecommunications in the writing departments at large
universities. Participants have been shocked to learn that even
department heads are unfamiliar with telecommunicating and are at a
loss when asked about bitnet or internet addresses. There is definitely a
desire to educate the academic world and drag them into the 21st
century.

LIST NAME: EDUC
EDUC is a discussion group open to those interested in
social science research done in or about Quebec, Canada.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS:
	LISTSERV@UQUEBEC.BITNET

PARTICIPATION ADDRESS:

REACTIONS:
This French language discussion group began in 1989 to
enable researchers in Canada and around the world to
connect and share information. EDUC is part of the
NETNORTH network which links Canadian research
institutions, colleges and universities together. In
order to participate in the EDUC LISTSERV, one needs to
also subscribe to RQSS at the same address as EDUC.
After doing so, the identical message of subscription
confirmation that one received from EDUC is sent,
except the address is different. This LISTSERV has
little activity, so I requested and received a list of
ten archived files, dating from February 18, 1992 -
January 14, 1993. The postings ranged from an
individual searching for the French version of Linkway
for the IBM, to a notice about another LISTSERV,
EDPOLYAR, which publishes articles on education policy
analysis. Another file requested subscribers to
provide any information on periodicals dedicated
	specifically to psycho-education.

N.B. Included in your subscription confirmation message
to this LISTSERV is an advisory (in French, English
and Spanish) stating that most of the communications are
in French. However, the majority of the archived files
	were in English.

REACTIONS - -
There is not much activity in this forum during the Spring semester
1992. As time passes and the expense of the hardware comes down I
would imagine that this group could become very active. Some of the
discussion touched on this subject. Most of the discussions that were
sent came from educators asking questions about software and printing
processes. Also discussed were how to generate masters prints.

Confirmation of Subscription --
	1. Once you have sent your message you will see a series of
messages on your screen that this file is being sent from one computer to
another until it gets to its final destination.
	2. Within a couple of days you should receive an E-mail message
that states that your subscription has been accepted.
	3. Then the mail starts coming. During the Spring '92 this group
was quite inactive, about 10 messages in a 40 day period.

LIST NAME: HIT (Highly Imaginative Technology and Science Fiction)

This LISTSERV group discuses a variety of topics such as computer
interface, cyberpublishing, and different technological ideas,
developments and applications.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS: LISTSERV@UFRJ.BITNET

PARTICIPATION ADDRESS: HIT@UFRJ.BITNET

This is a very active group which deals primarily with topics
regarding computer interface technology. A wide variety of topic had been
discussed. For example, computer interface, Star Trek, Time Travel,
Artificial Intelligence, and even Goverment Censorship about network
freedom. Maybe because the name of this group is 'Highly Imaginative
Technology', that attracts many different people to join. The structure
of the posting is very lose and has no specific 'hit' direction. There
were many debates going on. Imappropriate writings or off-the-ground
discussions were shown quite often. But one good thing of this group is
that it provides a free space for new ideas to discuss in a lively and
active way. You will get some interesting ideas from this group. If you
don't think you would be very interested in this group, don't subscribe
it. You will be quite disappointed.

REACTIONS:
Kidcafe is for kids ages 10-15. Here, they can talk about whatever they
like, establish relationships with new friends in other countries, discuss
the future, school, hobbies etc... Subscription is open to everyone
however, only students ages 10-15 may post. Adults may read but not
post. I enjoy reading the postings from students around the world. A true
global perspective developed rather quickly. It was not difficult to
motivate my students to use this listserve group. In fact I had a greater
challenge in scheduling access to the messages that we received. On
the down side, many of the postings are dull and rather trivial. Some are
extremely well done. It becomes an art of sifting through 25 - 50 postings
per day looking for those of interest. It is suggested that your mail be
checked frequently to avoid an avalanche. I do come across some
postings that are written in foreign languages, but almost all are written in
English. This does have possibilities for students studying foreign
languages though.

MathGroup_Mail_Archive
Sci.Math.Symbolic
Packages
These directories hold old MathGroup mailings. In
MathGroup_Mail_Archive, you will find files like MathGroupMail.1992.1.
This contains the first 1992 archive of the MathGroup mail. There should
be a file a month.
LIkewise for the Sci.Math.Symbolic subdirectory.

This subdirectory contains 13 subdirectories. Each subdirectory has a
name that indicates what is in it or the person who contributed the
contents of the directory. i.e. The STANFORD directory contains
everything that is on the otter.stanford.edu archive.
In some of the directories are compressed tar files (.tar.z). These have to

Native American children. The last topic brought the most discussion,
with a suggestion to use the K-ABC test. Also discussed was the lack of
interest in learning that appears in junior high within the Native American

_Postmodern Culture_ is a peer reviewed, electronic
journal distributed three times a year. The journal

messages are compiled and distributed as a single
document once a week. Traffic on the discussion list
is pretty light, usually no more than a half dozen
messages per week. Topics range from discussions of
               terminology, bibliographies, enquiries for

LIST NAME: SKEPTIC
This is a discussion group designed for philosophers,
psychologists, natural and biological scientists, writers, and anyone else
who is "skeptical" about the paranormal.

SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS: LISTSERV@YORKVM1

PARTICIPATION ADDRESS: SKEPTIC@YORKVM1

LIST COORDINATOR'S ADDRESS: None listed.

REACTIONS:
This discussion group would not be an appropriate list for
students, but it is a good source for the teacher. The topics themselves
are somewhat technical and unless you do alot of reading in the subject
areas mentioned at the beginning of this article you may be at a loss as
to what these people are talking about. Once you get into the swing of
things, though, it can become quite interesting. This might be a good
example of a discussion group that someone could start at the high
school level. It would be interesting to throw out topics that appear in the
news or even in textbooks that are somewhat "suspect" and then let the
students analyze their thoughts on why or why not this article is true or
false. I would think that you could get some lively discussions going. This
type of discussion group would take a little more monitoring than a less
controversial discussion group.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO THIS DISCUSSION GROUP:
1. Send an E-mail message to: LISTSERV@YORKVM1
2. Leave the subject line blank
3. Type this message: subscribe SKEPTIC Jane Doe (Instead of Jane
Doe you would actually type in your name.)
4. Send message
Confirmation:
1. Once you have sent your message you will see a series of messages
on your screen that this file is being sent from one computer to another
until it gets to its final destination.
2. Within a couple of days you should receive an E-mail message that
states that your subscription has been accepted.
3. Then the mail starts coming. During the Spring '92 around 2-10
messages a day was common. That is a nice flow of discussion.
How to send your own article to this group - -
1. You send messages through the E-mail to a different address than the
one given above. The above address is like a utilites address. The
discussion address is: SKEPTIC@YORKVM1
2. If you decide to participate in the group you will need to send a
command to: LISTSERV@YORKVM1 indicating what kind of
acknowledgment you wish to receive about your message. Your options
are:
SET SKEPTIC ACK -all mail is acknowledged SET SKEPTIC
MSGACK -interactive messages only SET SKEPTIC NOACK
-none are acknowledged

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS DISCUSSION GROUP:
		1. Send an E-mail message to: LISTSERV@YORKVM1
		2. Leave subject line blank
		3. Type this message: Signoff SKEPTIC
(Note that your name is not necessary this time.)
		4. Send message

OTHER FEATURES:
		1. A list of available archive files can be obtained by
		sending an INDEX SKEPTIC command.
		2. These files can be retrieved by means of a GET
SKEPTIC filetype command or by using the database
search facilities of LISTSERV. Send an INFO DATABASE
command for more information on this.
		3. Anyone can determine who is signed up for this list
by using the REVIEW command. If you do not wish your
name to be available to others in this fashion then you must
issue a SET SKEPTIC CONCEAL command.

by means of a "GET TAG-L filetype" command, or using the database
search facilities of LISTSERV. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for
more information on the latter.
Other options:
Anybody can determine if you are signed up to the list through the use of
the "REVIEW" command, which returns the network address and name of
all the subscribers. If you do not wish your name to be available to
others, issue a "SET TAG-L CONCEAL" command.
More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the "General

REACTIONS:
While I watched this listserv for the last two weeks, I found it was a weekly
electronic newsletter. It deals with information on events and products of
the week with an emphasis on the MacIntosh Last week's big story was
about a virus two students tried to put out at Rice University and were
caught. The FBI was involved but did not file federal charges.
The weekly newsletter is very lengthly. Each printing is from 9-13 single
spaced computer printout pages and takes considerable time to read.
For more information on TidBits, you send e-mail to
info@tidbits.halcyon.com and a file is supposed to be returned promptly.
I did not do this becuase of time restraints in preparation of this
assignment. This listserv took about a week for confirmation.
I would highly recommend this lengthly newsletter to anyone using the
MacIntosh computer.

REACTIONS:
This list is supported by the University of Kentucky. It was
originated to support discussion pertinent to those influenced
by the Kentucky Educational Reform Act (KERA). However,
it contains information and discussion that is relevant to K-12
education everywhere. While subscribed, I found messages
announcing the availability of Mini-grants, an announcement
of an upcoming live satellite broadcast from Africa, discussion
related to implementing technology in Kentucky with monies
provided by the State, an annotated listing of available print
and video presentations on infusing telecommunications into
the classroom, an invitation to discuss face to face some of the
main issues in implementing technology in the schools, and
other information on Internet resources. Based on this
assortment, I would recommend this list for anyone interested
in staying informed on issues and materials related to K-12 use
of the Internet. The frequency of daily messages is somewhat
small; however, the content retains quality.

This groups serves as a sounding board for writers to share their
writings, constructive criticisms, encouragement, and support.
Most of the listings center around weekly discussion topics
offered by members, in addition to poems, thoughts, and personal
reflections. There are occasional announcements of conferences
or publications of interest to writers.

This is a high volume posting group. You can expect anywhere
from 20 to 100 e-mail postings on a given day! It appears that
there is a small devoted group of members who correspond almost
daily to this listing. It appears to serve more as an informal
support group for writers than a listing of information for
professional writers.

The purpose of this group is to discuss the rights of

out what kids think.

they think is fair and what they think is a violation of their rights. I posted
their comments and ideas for further discussion on this listserv group.
