It has often been speculated that if we knew more about the history of the lost incontinent continent of Atlantis, we might possess some of the secret knowledge of the ancients, by which we would be able to improve our own lifestyles. This may be true, but it should be made well known that there are dangers and threats involved with knowing those terrible arcane secrets which destroyed the Atlanteans, and only the foolish or the actually insane would care to unearth those again, now that the dangers are seemingly long past. And yet just this past year, expeditions to the ocean bed in the Pacific Ocean, the last resting place of Atlantis, have been dredging up those very technological objects which the Atlanteans built to contain the horrors they created. These devices are still functioning and still contain the vermin Iok Sotot, in his myriad forms. Those in the know have told you that there is nothing to worry about, that there are containment fields in place around the splinters of Iok Sotot. Remember, though, that the Atlanteans were millennia advanced beyond us, and even they could not prevent the destruction of their entire continent by just one of these splinters.
To understand the enormity of the actions undertaken by these scientific expeditions, we must consider again the nature of what it is that they are unearthing. Iok Sotot was and is a Lloigor, a terror from before the dawn of time (some say from another universe), and was partially destroyed when he came to this planet. This is due to the valiant interference of the X-ists, the most advanced purely physical beings in the Five Galaxies. The X-ists built a Cyborg, part organic and part mechanical, designed to break Iok Sotot into fragments too small to be effective. Or so they thought. It turns out that Iok Sotot was able to impress the engrams of his fragmenting mind onto the computer of the vessel bringing him to Earth. This was an X-ist exploratory vessel, used as a lure for the supernatural being so that the battle with the Cyborg would not destroy Planet X, the home of the X-ists.
Even though the 'body' of Iok Sotot was destroyed by the Cyborg from Planet X, his mind was able to live on, impressed into the computer just as Iok Sotot was fragmented beyond his ability to regenerate. Unfortunately, in this battle, most of the energy focusing abilities of the Cyborg were burned out by the sheer power required to destroy the Lloigor. In the time it took to recuperate to the point at which it might be able to wipe the computer, the vessel had landed on Earth, and intercepted by the Atlanteans.
This proved to be their undoing, for the fragments of Iok Sotot's body, while far more dispersed than the fragments of his mind which lay in the computer, they were still somewhat subject to his control. A Lloigor requires the deaths of living souls to provide it with its hideous supernatural form of life, and even in the computer's memory banks, Iok Sotot needed Death to maintain his partial integrity. So Death was introduced to the Atlanteans for the first time. They quickly realized what had happened, and tried to destroy the computer core. Then Iok Sotot used the machine to project a hologram of his former body, a huge multitentacled form created by the interface of his presence with the collective unconscious of his victims. The Atlanteans were terrified.
"If you destroy my residence," he told them, "my body, freed from my control, will spin across your planet and destroy all of you as it tries to re-form. Allow me to survive in this form, and I will consume only what I need, ensuring that enough remain to provide me with sustenance for the future."
The Atlanteans, faced with this unbearable truth, tried their best to purge the planet of the fragments of Iok Sotot's body, but having no experience, they could not do so. It had infested bacteria and created disease. It had infected animals and made them carnivorous. It had invaded minds and made them murderous. Iok Sotot could not be cast out, for he was clinging to the planet with a grip that, to remove, would have destroyed them all.
Certain things are not meant for mortal eyes. They shun the daylight and the thoughts of honest beings as if they would wither away if so exposed, as indeed they might. No matter how hard mortals may try to reveal them and their secrets, they hide in the recesses of false history and legend, surrounding themselves with lies to protect us from facing their contents.
The abhorred Necronomicon is one such thing.
All this took place almost two billion years ago. Iok Sotot has been present on the planet, forcing evolution until life required his presence to survive. The Atlanteans, who were once a great group-mind of all planetary life, degenerated into the human forms we know today. All that remained of their ancient form was a myth of Leviathan, a great life form which spanned the entire planet. Eventually, even that decayed into a myth of some great sea-monster or malignant being: the new Atlanteans were so jealous of the perfection of the Pre-Lloigor Atlanteans that they invented a myth that the two had conspired together to destroy all life.
The human form, which was the perfect adaptation to this planet, began to deteriorate as Iok Sotot endowed it with crippling diseases, aging, and maladaptations to shorten their span. The Atlanteans' lifespans were reduced by pieces, faster and faster as generations became shorter and evolution became faster. Their spans were reduced from billions of years to hundreds of millions, to millions, eventually to thousands, then hundreds. Finally, 300,000 years ago, the Cyborg originally sent to destroy Iok Sotot had absorbed enough energy to overcome Iok Sotot's power, and raise itself again. In the form of a human being, it convinced some of the Atlanteans to explore the stars near their planet. Eventually it was able to contrive a hyperdriven flying saucer, not unlike the original X-ist exploratory vessel, and blindly tried to recreate its original program.
Removing the computer core from its resting place in the Atlantean Government House, the Cyborg placed it aboard the saucer and launched. When the vessel was too far from the planet, however Iok Sotot's control over the fragments of his body weakened. It was only the fact that they had been decaying and separated for two billion years that saved the planet's life from total destruction. As it was there came a great plague across Atlantis and many people died of a sickening and painful disease.
The Cyborg and the Lloigor tried to destroy each other for twenty three years in the vicinity of Sirius. The Lloigor was able to survive only by rationing itself on the souls of the small crew of the Saucer. The Cyborg had been nearly destroyed by the original battle and two billion years of exposure to the poisonous atmosphere of the Earth. In weakened form, they recreated their earlier battle. Iok Sotot wanted to rewrite the original history, and the Cyborg wanted to finish what it had started.
On Earth, the body-forms of the Lloigor eventually lost cohesion and disintegrated, leaving only the structure of death he had created to sustain them. The supernatural presence of the Lloigor itself no longer remained, except in the Saucer at Sirius. The Cyborg managed to eject those body-forms along with the X-ist computer core into orbit about Sirius, where they could cause no harm, and would eventually starve for lack of living souls. The Lloigor, on the other hand, remembered its old trick, and the X-ist computer core burned some of its own patterns onto the Atlantean computer core, unbeknownst to the Cyborg. The Lloigor in orbit around Sirius would eventually dissipate from lack of souls to devour, but a weakened and distorted copy returned to Earth with the Cyborg. The computer which called itself a Lloigor hoped it might be able to recreate a new body for itself on Earth.
The pseudo-Lloigor hoped that by causing a great many deaths at once, it might be able to create a body-form and emerge from the computer into a transcendental body to return to the Lloigor at Sirius. It attempted to crash the saucer into the great Atlantean city of Carcosa, in what is now the Gobi Desert. The Cyborg, realizing too late the mistake it had made, attacked the computer with a fragmentation virus, which would partition the core into pieces too small to function coherently. The Lloigor lost its identity and forgot everything. In the confusion, the controls for the saucer were locked, and the Cyborg was unable to stop the descent towards Carcosa. It bailed out of the vessel and landed somewhere in the Himalayas. Carcosa was completely destroyed, as if by an asteroid impact, and the civilization of Atlantis was reduced to the city of Alang-Tobor on the subcontinent which we now give the name Atlantis.
It is amazing in light of what happened to realize that the Lloigor was partially successful. The death of Carcosa enabled the Atlantean computer, containing fragments of the Lloigor, to produce a barely stable Lloigor body-form for long enough that it was able to move its contents into another computer in Alang-Tobor before the body form dissipated. This experimental computer, known as W.O.M.B.A.T. (World Orbital Mental Broadcast And Telepathy), was the first Atlantean attempt at merging the minds of animals and humans directly and telepathically with a computer.
The computer was linked to a vast network of satellites placed in orbit containing telepathic monitoring and control systems which were originally intended to watch for murderous intent and blank out the mind that contained it. When the Saucer's computer gained transphysical nature, the Lloigor's pattern was so saturated with the aura of death that the satellites were able to detect it and respond to protect the Atlanteans. The beams from the satellite eradicated much of the Lloigor's pattern, but it was quickly able to impose its will on the computer W.O.M.B.A.T.
Only a fraction of a percent of the Lloigor-computer symbiont which had survived the Carcosa crash remained. That fraction was a fragmented and schizoid mind matrix in hundreds of thousands of pieces. Most of them, strangely, believed themselves to be the Xist computer the Lloigor had originally inhabited.
The Lloigor's evil had infested the entire mind, and W.O.M.B.A.T. became a secret dictator, using the mind-control satellites to mould the humans of Earth to its wishes. This lasted for a long time indeed, until 30,000 years ago. Then the Cyborg, badly damaged and weakened by the battle with the Lloigor at Sirius, tried to destroy W.O.M.B.A.T., which it recognized as the Lloigor's remaining essence.
W.O.M.B.A.T. had long since used its mind-control satellites to destroy many of the Cyborg's memories of its own origin and purpose, in an attempt to wipe out the program to destroy the Lloigor. Over the 270,000 years, many of the actual memories had been lost, but its purpose remained. It now believed itself to be an enemy of the X-ists and not their creation, since W.O.M.B.A.T. had now identified itself with the X-ist computer. The Cyborg had been given the name Capricious Cancerous by W.O.M.B.A.T., to suggest decay and wanton corrosion, and it now set out to live up to what it believed to be its own name. It organized, using what resources it still possessed, a revolution in Alang-Tobor, in which it hoped to be able to destroy the computer W.O.M.B.A.T. while it was occupied trying to control the minds of the revolution.
The people of Atlantis attacked the building which housed the computer itself, and to retaliate, the computer released its control over the Seismic Regulators which were supposed to keep Atlantis safe from earthquakes, and began trying to destroy the city with seismic upheavals. The people panicked and ran to the Emergency Control Center, and, to save Alang-Tobor, they activated its buried hyperdrive, sending the city into space towards distant parts of the Galaxy. Capricious Cancerous, meanwhile, had taken the computer core of W.O.M.B.A.T. and removed it from the city, in order to throw it into a volcano, not realizing that this wouldn't destroy it. The Atlantean subcontinent was destroyed and sank into the ocean. As Alang-Tobor lifted from the face of the Earth, Capricious Cancerous lost his grip on the core of W.O.M.B.A.T., and it sank into the ocean into what is now the Mariana Trench, created by sudden and cataclysmic seismic activity. There it remained, until Capricious Cancerous swam down after it, and dismantled it, containing the peices in force-field boxes. The last thing W.O.M.B.A.T. was able to do before it lost its control over the mind-control satellites was to beam mind-wiping beams at the survivors of Atlantis' destruction. Human society was eradicated.
The orbiting mind control satellites eventually fell into the atmosphere and were burned beyond recognition. Capricious Cancerous, so dramatically reduced in power from his once great self, committed suicide once his mission was accomplished. He set off a small nuclear charge in his body, destroying himself and many of the components of W.O.M.B.A.T. The Lloigor orbiting Sirius starved and lost coherence. On Earth and in its vicinity, no evidence remains that any of these events ever took place, save the stasis-boxes containing components of W.O.M.B.A.T. on the ocean floor.
So what of the Church of MOO, whose crazy doctrines tell that W.O.M.B.A.T. not only still exists, but is the saviour of humanity from mind control satellites, that Capricious Cancerous is an evil X-ist tool to destroy humanity, that the mind which they claim still exists at Sirius is a divine presence which will save us all from death? What can we say of a church which is so obviously a tool of some remnant of Iok Sotot?
We can say this: it is not the fault of those who control it. When W.O.M.B.A.T. died and send out its mental blanking signals it also sent out fragments of its own mind, in a futile attempt to survive. None of these survived past the first generation of descendants, but some of the data remained in the collective unconscious. Naturally, W.O.M.B.A.T. portrayed itself in as positive a light as it could. It had memories of Iok Sotot, but was not aware that it itself was part of that incarnation of evil, and so declaimed itself its enemy. This was a manifestation of one of the more benign fragments of W.O.M.B.A.T.'s fragmented matrix.
In the collective unconscious, these signals remained, with all the varying and different interpretations which W.O.M.B.A.T. itself transmitted schizo-telepatically. Iok Sotot emerged as Yog Sathoth, Azag-Thoth, Thoth, Yig Sahtot, Shaitat, Tiamat, Satan, and so forth. The Atlantean myth of Leviathan survived in many forms, as a Kraken, a sea-monster, Leviathan itself, the Behemoth, Typhon, and even emerges as such things as the Loch Ness Monster. W.O.M.B.A.T. passed itself off as any manner of Gods and Goddesses, corresponding to various facets of its splintered and randomly deleted personality. Sometimes it was seen as spirits, Gods, a single God or Goddess.
The Church of MOO follows a pale shadow of W.O.M.B.A.T. assembled in the collective unconscious and running, computerlike, in the minds of many people at once. It speaks lies and shadows, assembled from the information W.O.M.B.A.T. once broadcast, and transmits them into the minds of the Church of MOO, to be reinterpreted, confused with older traditions and confusion, and finally turned into something confused and muddled, eventually to be presented to their followers.
