Oak and Orca is an affordable independent elementary school in Victoria, British Columbia. Our mission is to provide educational opportunities that empower children to create fundamental social change towards more fulfilling and ecologically sustainable communities. To this end, we have chosen a teaching approach that models bioregional philosophies and provides freedom of expression and choice to students.
Oak and Orca Bioregional School is a certified elementary school. Through self directed learning and experiencial education in multi-aged classes, students learn all the required subjects based on their interests. As an ungraded school, students are able to learn at their own pace, based on what they already know and what they are ready to learn. Students are neither held back from learning challenging curriculum nor pushed ahead before a complete understanding has been acheived. Small classes and many adults in the classroom allow students to learn independently in a child-directed manner with plenty of help and attention.
Oak and Orca uses a focus of bioregional education within which all subject areas are taught. The following components of bioregionalism are integrated into the bioregional curriculum and the framework of the Oak and Orca experience: study of the local bioregion, experiencial learning, consensus decision making, participatory democracy, ecological education, field work, nature interpretation, nature awareness, and deep ecology.
