Assessment and treatment centre provides day hospital and inpatient services for people over 65 years of age who need more intensive diagnostic investigation and treatment than is available in the community. Emphasis is on improving the physical, social, and emotional well-being of each client referred, through social, educational, and recreational programs, and rehabilitative therapy. May include participation at the day hospital twice a week for up to 12 weeks. Assistance is also given on an outreach basis for those confined to their homes. Clients can be admitted to the 17-bed inpatient unit; average stay is four weeks. Referrals accepted from physicians, community health workers, or self. Transportation to and from the centre is provided within Vancouver.

Provides direct cash assistance to eligible seniors age 60 and over who pay rent for their homes. Reimburses part of the difference between 30% of a senior's total income, and their rent.


Drop-in centre for Chinese-Canadian seniors who are residents of the Downtown Eastside. Sponsors English classes and provides translation, advocacy, and social activities.

Multipurpose recreational facility for seniors age 55 and older. Provides information and referral about seniors’ benefits and issues. Offers income tax preparation for low-income seniors, simple will preparation, and opportunities to volunteer. Activities include indoor games and sports, woodworking and sewing, a walking club, trips and tours; and classes in ESL, Spanish, arts, yoga, and tai chi. Health services include podiatry, blood pressure clinics, and dental screening clinics. There are thrift, gift, and book stores, and a video lending library. Also provides low-cost nutritious meals. Projects include the Falls Prevention Project; the Women Elders in Action (WE*ACT) Project; and the Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered, Bisexual (LGTB) Generations Project (offered in partnership with Family Services of Greater Vancouver and The Centre, and listed under The Centre in this directory). The 411 Seniors Centre welcomes all seniors. Membership is $8 per year. Hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. The cafeteria opens at 8 am and is also open on Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm.

Programs and services include community education, with a focus on literacy; volunteer opportunities; First Nations cultural sharing; HIV and hepatitis support groups; activities for seniors; and various recreational programs. Offers educational, cultural, recreational, and social programs for people in the Collingwood/Renfrew area. Operates licensed child care programs, a Family Place (providing activities for preschoolers while allowing parents/caregivers to relax and socialize), day camps, ESL classes for adults (child care provided for some classes), seniors information, fitness and social programs, family support programs, Chinese and Spanish settlement workers, and community information in various languages. Also offers the Nobody's Perfect parenting program, listed in this directory under East Vancouver Nobody's Perfect Project. Supports and trains family child care providers through a family child care outreach service, and offers the Access Program (child care referrals and child care subsidy). Youth services include assessment and referral to counselling, drop-in social/recreational activities (5 pm to 9 pm Fridays and 4 pm to 8 pm Saturdays), and homework tutoring by university students. The Buddy Program (604-412-3844) matches elementary school students who are new immigrants/refugees with high school mentors, in order to support their adjustment to Canadian life. The VIP Program (604-412-3844), from 8:15 pm to 10 pm Saturdays, offers recreation activities and access to neighbourhood house facilities for high-risk youth with behaviour problems, who have been banned from regular activities (registration and referral is required). A shopping program is available, providing transportation to and assistance with grocery shopping.
