I wondered if we might be able to apply to be a Computers for Schools
refurbishing and distribution site, but there is only one site and it is an
organization called RCT out of Mississauga, we partner with them to get
computers to distribute, but we are doing this without funding, and will not
be able to continue as a distributor.

We can get computers from them, but we won't be here to provide them to the
community.

Last year we distributed 64 computers. From Jan - Mar this year we are
averaging 16/mo for a total of 48 already. We are distributing some
inventory we receive from RCT in combination with unwanted computers that we
receive from community donors. We have provided from Jan- Mar 48 computers
with 20 of the recipients enrolled in an educational program. 28 of the
computers were refurbished from donations received from the community. All
recipients are low income, on EI, or ODSP or Ontario Works.

Subject: [Advisors] Response from Tony Clement

Friends - I'm trying to decide how I'll write up this response from Tony
Clement on my blog. I don't find this response surprising, but I do find it
disheartening. I've asked him again to also explain how the gov't expects
1300 youth intern jobs to be created without CAP (or anyone to hire such
interns) and some specific questions about how this will affect his riding.
I don't expect to get a response. Meantime, here is his official response
which pretty much parrots the IC release - although note the last line:

'The Community Access Program was launched in 1995 and has met its
objectives.

The vast majority of Canadians are now connected to the Internet at home,
while many more have access through their mobile devices.

Schools, libraries and not-for-profit learning organizations will continue
to benefit from other federal initiatives such as the Computers for Schools
Program (CFS). Since 2006, the CFS Program has received, and fulfilled,
requests for 198 computers that were distributed in the Parry Sound-Muskoka
riding. These computers were distributed to eligible recipients, including
schools, libraries, not-for-profit learning organizations and Aboriginal
communities.

Federal funding will continue to support approximately thirteen hundred
youth internships at community Internet sites. This will provide young
Canadians with vital skills and work experience needed to make a successful
transition to the workplace while contributing to job creation.

We will also focus our efforts on strengthening the infrastructure needed to
connect Canadians to the internet, such as through the spectrum auctions
announced in March.'

Tony Clement, M.P.
