BCNET has been driving the IX agenda here in western Canada by way of =
their Internet Transit Project:

=
https://wiki.bc.net/atl-conf/display/Projects/Western+Canadian+Internet+Tr=
ansit+Project

Cybera is now building on this agenda with its Calgary Internet Exchange =
project:

=
https://www.cybera.ca/news/traditional-competitors-gather-bring-more-effic=
ient-internet-alberta?page=3D28

Cybera's recent Town Hall in Calgary was attended by a rep from CIRA.

Canada's optical research advanced networks (ORANs) are best positioned =
to advance the IX agenda to everyone's benefit, including communities.

BCNET and Cybera are both interested to support community broadband =
interests, but don't have a mandate for it (yet).

By way of CANARIE, the ORANs could be collaborating to drive a very =
effective nationwide program for IX development.=20

However, CANARIE doesn't have a mandate for this (yet).

i-CANADA has a good relationship with CANARIE already, and could bring =
their growing footprint of community/municipal interests to bear on this =
growing conversation.

I've therefore been encouraging i-CANADA to take a more active role in =
promoting and advancing the IX agenda for the benefit of =
community/municipal broadband interests.

This would include collaboration with CANARIE, CIRA and any other group =
that is prepared to take active roles in advancing this important =
agenda, including Telecommunities Canada.=20

I have already made this specific recommendation to iCANADA, and will =
continue to champion the idea.

I am now encouraging TC to take a more active interest in iCANADA, and =
how these two organizations could collaborate more effectively.

With this end in mind, I'll draw your attention to the October 21st =
iCANADA Summit in Montreal, which is being held in conjunction with the =
WCIT Summit Oct 22 - 24:

=
http://icanada.nu/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/CATA-i-CANADA-WCIT-Event-Join=
t-Program-Jun-27-12.pdf

A discounted combined registration fee for both events is available by =
way of i-CANADA.

If any of you are interested to attend either event, please let me know =
how I can help.

If TC is interested and has representation attending either Summit, I =
will want to set up a meeting with i-CANADA to discuss opportunities to =
collaborate.=20

The outcome I most want to see is iCANADA reaping the benefit of TC's =
extensive knowledge and experience in community informatics, especially =
in relation to public policy development.=20

In principle, iCANADA is becoming better positioned to take on the role =
of advancing community/municipal ICT interests at a national scale.=20

In practice, iCANADA remains associated with the Canadian Advanced =
Technology Alliance (CATA).=20

This needs to change for everyone's benefit, and I could really use some =
help in making it happen.

Technically, one of these IPXs would consist of groups of distributors =
(ISPs) and content providers who would work together to route traffic =
inside Canada. CIRA wants to facilitate this kind of cooperation -- but =
I want to be sure that they include community owned broadband groups =
from the beginning. I'm not sure how to do this. I talked to one of =
the current directors about this issue (from B.C.) and he was keen to =
get in touch with B.C. groups who could participate.
