Making sense of/interpreting the results of these kinds of surveys are a
real problem and often the results are rather misleading (note Mr. =
Harper
re: the Canadian long form census). Given the way the question is
structured the results may tell us as much about the current =
socio-economic
status of the respondent as it does about the actual set of "priorities =
for
oneself and one's families" (although the two of course are related=85), =
thus
for example if you are reasonably comfortable middle class Canadian you
might put individual freedom, good governance and the Internet fairly =
high
while if you are First Nations in a fly-in community in Northern Ontario =
you
might put clean water as your first (only?) priority=85 Or if you live =
in
Vancouver and the water supply has just been polluted by a burst dam
somewhere or if you live in a FN rerserve where the elected Chief has
channelled all the funds for fresh water supply to himself and his =
brother
in law for a trip to Las Vegas your priorities might shift.

Voting at this UN Myworld site is an interesting priority adjustment
exercise . Only 300 responses from Canada, so give a try. Hard to =
justify
voting for Internet service, though, over very basic needs like food, =
water
and political freedoms. I see why it ended up at the bottom. =20
It is a bit of a scattered approach, I think, to collecting this kind of
information. People, me included, tend to click first, then engage in =
deeper
thought about the choices presented later. =20

A little off-topic, but a story today on the UN's crowdsourcing its new
development plan that will replace the Millennium Development Goals when
they expire in 2015

The UN has organized conferences in almost 100 countries to discuss the
future initiatives, UN Assistant Secretary-General Olav Kj=F8rven writes =
in
<http://www.guardian.co.uk/media-network/media-network-blog/2013/may/07/u=
nit
ed-nations-crowdsource-global-development> a blog post. Individuals have
also responded to a survey on a related =

web platform, World We Want 2015, by SMS and through an interactive =
voice
response system (IVR) that recognizes local languages and dialects. The =
idea
seems to be to reach people in person where technology is not ubiquitous =
and
by mobile phone or Internet where that can reach broader audiences.
=20
The resulting report will be given to the UN secretary-general Ban =
Ki-moon
and other global leaders at the UN general assembly in September 2013, =
who
will take the information into account when finalizing the next global
development plan.

Phone and Internet service are ranked right at the bottom, only trailed =
by
transport and roads.
