Montréal, le 1er mai 2017 – L’impact social, les opportunités économiques, les avancées techniques qu’ont engendré Internet, l’ordinateur personnel et le téléphone intelligent sont sans pareil. L’imprimante 3D, la découpe laser et la CNC sont dans la même lignée. Au quatre coins du monde, depuis 15 ans, ces outils de fabrication numérique et leur mode de fonctionnement en réseau font éclater les modèles en place en ouvrant des opportunités jusque là inaccessibles.
Ici au Canada, tout ça est encore récent, méconnu, fragmenté, bien que cela représente une incroyable force en termes d’innovation et de développement de compétences.
« C’est pour que le plus de gens possible découvrent les ressources disponibles et bénéficient de nouvelles opportunités que démarre aujourd'hui l’aventure Fab Labs Nation, une tournée de trois mois en caravane à travers le pays à la rencontre des Fab Labs canadiens et autres espaces collaboratifs de fabrication », indique Monique Chartrand, directrice générale de Communautique. Cette initiative audacieuse souhaite contribuer à l’émergence d’une véritable interstructure nationale adaptée aux spécificités des différentes régions et connectée au réseau mondial en pleine effervescence composé de plus de 1200 Fab Labs dans une centaine de villes du monde entier qui collaborent via un réseau mondial animé par la Fab Foundation, créée par le Centre for Bits and Atoms du Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) et dont la mission est de « fournir un accès aux outils, à la connaissance et aux moyens financiers pour éduquer, innover et inventer en utilisant la technologie et la fabrication numérique pour permettre à quiconque de créer (presque) tout ».
Les Fab Labs visent à aider les entreprises à concrétiser leurs produits physiques et à accélérer leur lancement commercial en s’appuyant sur l’intelligence collective pour mieux innover. Ils peuvent également accompagner les inventeurs vers des ententes avec des entreprises et contribuent à l’émergence de nouveaux modèles d’affaires, voire même de nouvelles formes d’entreprises.
L'initiateur du projet
Communautique, le Hub d’innovation ouverte dédié à l’apprentissage, la collaboration, la recherche et l’expérimentation en innovation sociale et technologique, accompagne l'essor des Fab Labs au Québec depuis plus de 6 ans. L’organisation oeuvre depuis 18 ans à la démocratisation de l’accès aux technologies dans une perspective de développement économique, culturel et social. Le projet est aussi appuyé par des partenaires ayant à coeur la réussite de l'initiative. Nous souhaitons remercier nos partenaires de la première heure : la fondation de la famille J.W. Les Fab Labs et la fabrication numérique
Les Fab Labs sont considérés pour certains comme une « troisième révolution industrielle ». Ce type
d'atelier s'inscrit dans un mouvement qui permet à tous d’innover, de créer, de produire, de distribuer, de consommer, de réparer et recycler leurs objets eux-mêmes ou avec d’autres. Un lieu appelé à être un modèle de partenariat pour les organisations et les territoires, interface entre lieu ouvert d’innovation ascendante, les communautés d'utilisateurs et la R&D des organisations.
Une véritable communauté internationale gravite autour des Fab Labs, par l'implantation de laboratoires dans des milliers de villes et villages. Le potentiel qui en découle pour la vitalité des communautés croit sans cesse et est exploré dans de multiples secteurs : santé, créativité, éducation, entrepreneurship, etc.. Les Fab Labs font partie du mouvement d'innovation ouverte (open Innovation) et sont les outils concrets d'une Ville intelligente (Smart City). Enfin, ils offrent une forme de valorisation des savoirs artisans par une réappropriation de l’ère industrielle avec l'usage des nouvelles technologies.
Les Fab Labs sont la matérialisation d’une vision audacieuse de l’avenir :
des modes de conception et de production des objets matériels
du partage et du développement des compétences et des connaissances
Les communautés peuvent devenir plus créatives et résilientes si elles ont accès à des technologies de pointe localement et aux connaissances pour les mettre en oeuvre vers des projets concrets pour répondre à la complexité des enjeux de nos sociétés. On parle maintenant de Fab Cities, de réseaux nationaux et continentaux et même d'une Fab Country.
Ce développement rapide s'appuie sur, ou résonne avec, plusieurs tendances de fond, parmi lesquelles :
La conjonction entre la numérisation de la conception, de la production et de la gestion du cycle de vie des objets industriels ; la baisse du prix des logiciels et des machines à commande numérique ; et la mise en réseau des acteurs, facilitée par le développement de l'internet et la standardisation des formats.
L'extension de l'open source, né dans le monde du logiciel, à l'électronique (ex. contrôleurs Arduino), aux machines (ex. imprimante 3D RepRap et ses forks), voire aux biens de consommation (machine à laver et voitures open source par exemple).
Le développement rapide de toutes sortes de « tiers ateliers » (de médiation, de service, de travail, culturels, communautaires…), qui fonctionnent comme des nœuds physiques de réseaux à la fois physiques et numériques, locaux et globaux.

Montreal, 1st May 2017 – PCs, the Internet, and smartphones have had huge impacts on societal networking, in economic opportunities, and in technological advances. 3D printing, laser cutting, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) are amongst these advances. For the past 15 years, these digital manufacturing tools and their networking modalities have revolutionized industry worldwide and opened-up manufacturing possibilities that once seemed unbelievable.
These opportunities have not been widely recognized in Canada, being too new and not implemented enough to catch-on. Canada has yet to realise the enormous potential in innovation of these technologies and the skills needed to master them.
“It is to make people aware of the resources available as well as the new opportunities that can benefit their communities that Fab Labs Nation is being launched today; an adventure involving a cross-Canada, three-month tour by caravan to meet Canadian Fab Labs and other collaborative manufacturing projects,” announced Ms. Monique Chartrand, general manager of Communautique. This initiative, audacious in its scope, aims to help develop a Canadian inter-structure that is mindful of each region’s specificities. This is concurrent with a rapidly expanding network of over 1200 Fab Labs, spread around 100 cities across the globe, that collaborate via the Fab Foundation, itself a creation of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA). Following are excerpts from CBA’s mission statement for Fab Labs :“Fab labs are a global network of local labs, enabling invention by providing access to tools for digital fabrication. Fab Labs also help start-ups and established companies prototype their products and aid in commercial launches by tapping into shared knowledge, all in order to better innovate. Fab Labs and digital manufacturing
Some consider Fab Labs to be a “third industrial revolution.” This type of laboratory/workshop is part of a movement that empowers everyone to innovate, create, produce, distribute, consume, repair, and/or recycle objects for themselves, with others. It is a space that can be called upon as a partnering model between organisations and territories; an open space where high-reaching innovation, communities of students, workers, and various other end users, as well as R&D clients, can come together.
An international community of end users gravitates towards Fab Labs. They are set up as laboratory/workshops in thousands of cities and towns. They hold enormous potential and can be vital for the growth of communities. They have proven their usefulness in a variety of sectors: health, creativity, education, entrepreneurship, etc. Fab Labs form part of the Open Innovation movement and are faithful tools for a Smart City. Moreover, they can showcase knowledge of arts and crafts by using new technologies at the dawn of this new industrial age.
Fab Labs allow bold visions to be made real and help the farsighted grasp the future:
By way of imagining and producing solid objects
By sharing and developing skills and knowledge
Communities can become more creative and resilient if they can locally access cutting-edge technologies as well as the knowledge and skills needed to use them. Dreams that solve society’s complex problems can turn into real world projects. Fab Cities are no longer mere concepts. National and continental networks are being discussed and one even hears of a Fab Country.

The concurrence of digital design with the production and life-cycle management of industrial products; the drop in price of computer software and digitally guided machine tools; and the networking of stakeholders made possible by the Internet and a standardization of sizes/formats.
The extension of open source, beginning in the realm of software, to electronics, e.g., Arduino controllers, to digitally guided machine tools, e.g., 3D RepRap printers and their forks, and even to consumer goods, e.g., open source washing machines and vehicles.
The rapid development of “third-party workshops/studios” (for purposes of mediation, for services, for work, for culture, for community bases…), that function as physical knots of networks, be 	they physical or digital, local or global.
The search for new forms of learning/training, as well as accreditations that respect and value “doing” and “the cleverness of hands,” while relating to the possibilities that the digital world offers.
