Subject: Invitation: Indigenous Connectivity Summit

On behalf of the Internet Society, I would like to invite you to join us at
the second Indigenous Connectivity Summit
<https://www.internetsociety.org/events/indigenous-connectivity-summit/2018/
> (ICS) October 11-12, 2018 in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada. The
ICS is an initiative of the Internet Society, in partnership with the
Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, the Town of Inuvik, the University of
Alberta, and the First Mile Connectivity Consortium.

This important event will focus on Indigenous community networking
throughout in Canada and the U.S. At this community-led forum, we will focus
on middle mile and backhaul for very rural or remote Indigenous communities
in Canada and the United States with a series of panels, presentations,
workshops, and networking events. Some of the world¹s leading thinkers on
Internet connectivity will be in attendance, including business and
community leaders, network operators, representatives from the Canadian and
American governments, among others.

Pre-conference training on community networking best practices is available
and will take place on October 9 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
The training will offer the opportunity for participants to learn more about
building community networks as well as contribute their own expertise if
they already have experience raising community networks.

By participating in this event, you will play an important role in helping
us find ways to ensure Inuit, First Nations, Métis, Alaska Native, and
Native American communities explore the ways and means to enable affordable,
high-quality and sustainable network access, with ways to support social,
cultural and economic development. More information is available on the
Summit website
<https://www.internetsociety.org/events/indigenous-connectivity-summit> .

Register today
<https://www.internetsociety.org/events/indigenous-connectivity-summit/2018/

Subject: [Advisors] ISOC revives discussions on community networks

Hello advisors. I came across this notice (below) from Brian Beaton too late
to attend the webinar. But the two papers released by the Internet Society
(ISOC) on Unleashing Community Networks and Spectrum Approaches to Community
Networks (see below for links) are valuable additions to the literature
about the continuing importance of community networks around the world and
the barriers that exist and how to address them.

I think we can all probably get behind the definition of community networks
in these documents. "Community networks refer to telecommunications
infrastructure deployed and operated by a local group to meet their own
communication needs. They are the result of people working together,
combining their resources, organizing their efforts, and connecting
themselves to close connectivity and cultural gaps."

I wonder how we might be able to build on the base ISOC is creating here to
further community networking discussions and policies here in Canada. We
don't see these terms used much anymore although the job is far from
finished.
