Hi folks,

I’m reaching out with some quick news updates, and to see who would like
to join us in rapid response on the (TBD) day of Maryam Monsef’s
Universal Broadband Fund announcement.

News: Yesterday, CIRA released new data from their Internet Performance
Test
<https://www.cira.ca/newsroom/state-internet/new-internet-performance-data-shows-urban-speeds-improving-while-rural>—and
it’s bad news for folks on the wrong side of the Digital Divide. The gap
between rural and urban Internet speeds has seriously worsened during
the pandemic, with urban speeds doubling while rural speeds sit pretty
much stagnant. You can check out OpenMedia’s Press Release on the report
here <https://openmedia.org/press/item/performance-data-aug2020>.

Hours later, the CRTC also finally came out and announced the first
round of Broadband Fund recipients to connect Canada’s north
(applications closed for Round 1 of the $750 million Fund in late 2019,
AKA pre-pandemic). While it’s fantastic that thousands of northern
households are on their way to faster Internet speeds, there’s more than
a few outstanding issues in our eyes. More on that here
<https://openmedia.org/press/item/crtc-first-round-of-broadband-fund-to-connect-canadas-north>.

Both developments are pointing right at the massive elephant in the
room: where in the world is Maryam Monsef, and what the heck is going on
with the $1.7 BILLION Universal Broadband Fund announcement that was due
weeks ago?(If you have insider info on these burning questions, PLEASE
spill 😩.Just kidding...unless..?)

Rapid Response: When Monsef finally makes her move, we want to be ready
for it. Would you be interested in collaborating with the GCC on that
early response? If so, the coalition would love to hear from you:

  *

Are you planning to put out a press release/social media post the
    day of the announcement?

  *

Do you have anything currently on the go that GCC members can
    support with?

  *

Do you have any ideas for how the GCC can keep applying pressure to
    Monsef and the government?

NB: OpenMedia is planning to livestream on Facebook the day of the
announcement, offering our first take. Would you be interested in
joining us to weigh in? Let us know!

Thanks for all that you do,

Erin at OpenMedia
