Hi Ron

We worked hard hounding them to restore the funding level- even though it
was inadequate to start with. So it's a success of sorts...They withheld
$11m from original amount..

Federal summer jobs program retooled for nonprofits 

The federal government is reported to have introduced what they are
referring to as a scrapped and rebuilt program to fund summer jobs for
students. A change in programming that will redirect nearly all funds from
private business and into the hands of nonprofit groups, according to a
recent press release. 

The Canada Summer Jobs program is soon to be unveiled by Ottawa, providing
upwards of $86 million in wage subsidies for organizations to hire high
school and post-secondary students during their summer breaks. 

"The same amount of funding that was available to the not-for-profit sector
under the old program last year will be available this year - that is, $77.3
million," said Lesley Harmer, communications director for Human Resources
and Social Development Minister Monte Solberg. "That's because we recognize
that not-for-profits rarely have access to other sources of funding and they
consistently create high-quality jobs."

The new summer jobs program will also give priority to visible-minority
groups, rural regions and high crime and unemployment areas.
